That was the sort of weather that was forecast for the UK Midlands for
Sunday morning so I didn't even set the alarm clock, but when I awoke at 8
a.m., true to form, the sun was shining from a clear blue sky!
I grabbed my zoom bag containing my 35-70mm f3.5-4.5 on my OM-40 body with
the 24mm Miranda stuffed into the nose of the bag and set off for a
picturesque lane about 8 miles away, where the messy-tropolis meets the
green belt. I got side-tracked for half an hour by a car boot sale on the
way (no Oly, or any photographic content, no purchases) and later was
side-tracked again when I saw the entrance to a private lake where my sister
and I had walked to some years ago. As I turned into the narrow road I was
met by a barrage of 'Keep Out' and 'No Unauthorised Vehicle Access' notices,
so I slowed down and wondered how I could turn round and drive out, but two
cars had followed me and there was nowhere to go except straight ahead,
which I did. I parked in a wider stretch of road further on and my presence
was ignored by other drivers.
By the time I'd walked to the lake, the clouds were building up, and I
noticed, not for the first time, that whenever I lift the OM-40 away from
the shade of my body and expose its black, heat sensitive shell to direct
sunlight, it appears to signal a cloud to move immediately in front of the
sun to protect it. It does this even with ESP (Extraordinary Shell
Protection?) apparently switched off, and I have to stand in the shade of a
tree before it will let the sun will come out again. By moving swiftly (or
as near to swiftly as I get) from tree to tree, I obtained some shots of
short-flowering yellow pond irises with the sunlit lake as a background. Not
very exciting perhaps, but they should suit the of start of summer theme,
and anyway, Sunday morning in Birmingham and excitement just aren't
synonymous. I just hope the prints live up to my expectations.
I enjoyed this first ADITL and I've promised myself I'll do some more Sunday
morning photo excursions.
