and perhaps seek out to
document one or two of the infamous "Muffler Men":

Great site -- thanks for the URL! This is important work, and I'm glad to see it's getting the attention it deserves! (BTW: I believe the mutant muffler man/rabbit of Aloha, Oregon is actually a "pookah." Jimmy Steward fans, please correct spelling as required.)

Then I'm gonna shoot some color negative using the shift lens to see if I
can get some sort of panoramic out of it by tripoding the OM-4 and winder,
shift to the left, shift to the right...
Wonder if anyone has ever tried that with a shift,

There's a German company (actually, a person, I think) that makes tilt/shift adaptors for using MF lenses on 35mm bodies. They document making pans using their shift adaptor just the way you mention.

I looked into their stuff -- nice, but extremely expensive, at over $1500 for the basic tilt set-up! Ken Hansen in NYC knows the guy and reps the gear. He said the owner has health problems, and has been using "price rationing" in order to semi-retire.

As I recall, the procedure they describe is straightforward, just as John mentions. Haven't tried it, though!
