It may well harm the NiCd batteries if partially charged and fully charged
cells are used together, unless that use is very brief. If one (or more) of
the partially charged cells uses up all its juice well before the rest, and
the device in question (flash) still functions on the resultant voltage, the
discharged cell(s) will become reverse charged, which drastically shortens
their useful life. Same would apply to NiCd cells mixed with alkalines.
