Nodding agreement with Hans to scan both pieces seperately, then join them
digitally and Jan to bag PhotoDeluxe and go with Photoshop. Check and make
sure of the PS version - there is a 4.0 and a 4.0.1. The 4.0.1 has a number
of pure performance enhancements that are quite helpful for the impatient
among us <g>. Version 5.0 has many nice features, such as multiple undo,
but at the expense of performance and >vast< quantities of memory
consumption, on the order of 5x the sum of the image layers.

In PS, work the image as two layers until you get the alignment where you
want it. Then flatten the image into a single layer and begin the retouch
process. the airbrush, pencil and smudge tools will likely be the most
useful. Once the overall image is joined and looks good all over, then
apply any other enhancements such as adjusting contrast or brightness, etc.
Try to work with the highest resolution you possibly can, and in a non-lossy
format, such as uncompressed TIF. If you want a jpg for emailing or web
publishing, save a copy from the uncompressed master image.
