The OM-4 works like this: When you first bring it to your eye and depress the
shutter button to activate the meter, the bar graph shows the center-weighted
reading. When you press the SPOT button, a few things happen. First, a spot
reading is taken (spot area is the size of the focusing aids on the standard
screens). A little diamond appears in the display indicating the reading. The
bar graph will coincide with the diamond. A second diamond will now appear,
which is the immediate (real-time) spot reading, again reading from the
focusing aid area. At this point you can make the exposure with the single
reading, which will also clear it, or you can press SPOT again. This takes
another spot reading, indicates it with a diamond, and the bar graph shows
the average of the two readings. A third diamond appears, again showing the
real-rime spot reading (this "dynamic diamond" is NOT used in calculating
exposure). You can average up to 8 readings. When you press SPOT the 9th
time, the first reading is lost.

Hope this helps,
