It clears the exposure memory, including spot readings, which would be
invalid if a difeerent lens were mounted. You still have to reset manually if
a teleconverter or extension device (tube, telescoping tube, or bellows) is
attached.

This is to support the power rewind function on the MD2. I've never seen the
MD2, but I believe it turns the "screw head" which opens up the 3/8" cover
allowing it to couple to the rewind shaft. Or something like that.
