        Dear all,

My name is Michael (30), I have been subscribing to the Olympus list for
about 4 months now. I've just been listening and learning the whole time by
reading my digests every day. I can honestly say that I have read every
single digest since I have subscribed. Sometimes I get a bit behind, and
have to spend about 3 hours catching up (in work time of course). My
interest in Olympus came from my father (now 68) who owned an OM1 (died in
saltwater dunking) and currently a OM30 (last 15 years). I have just
purchased a 2nd had OM4, a 28 f3.5, 35-105 F3.5-4.0, and 50 1.8, next will
be the hard-to-find 100-200 zoom. (Its worth noting here that everybody
knocks the '30 but I think this is funny considering the metering and lens
really determines the camera quality)

My father had absolutely unbelievable slides and prints he has shown me
for
the last 20 years and when my "VOITLANDER VITO 2" (which had fold-out
bellows for the lenses) got stolen (german leaf-shutter camera c1959) and my
Western-exposure meter, I bought my OM4.

I couldnt justify buying a new camera for 20 years because the quality of
the shots from the German camera was unbelievable. I know you other olympus
users will snigger, but the shots were more "alive" and"magical" than any
Olympus lens. I'm sure even today the "Nazi's" (joke) still make better
cameras, but there is such a surplus of olympus lenses on the market at the
moment, you can get a decent 80's kit together cheap.

I have seen a lot of talk peddled about the benefits of owning a OM4 or
OM4(ti). The OM4 can often be a battery drainer, and all the Photographic
shops talk of it.

The bottom line is that Olympus must have cottoned on to the problem
early
on whilst manufacturing the OM4, because they changed the electronics to
what would become the OM4(ti) board later on.

When you buy a OM4, when the storekeeper is not looking, turn the
battery
check lever to check. If you have the OM4(ti) board, it will turn off after
30seconds, otherwise you have a potential battery drainer.

If it turns off after 30seconds buy the camera..... otherwise leave it....
another will come along with the om4ti board ... eventually. At some
internet sites such as www.mxv.co.uk, you will see the "OM4 with ti circuit
board" listed at about 250usd more expensive than the normal OM4.

I can hear all you OM4 users rushing to test your cameras now!!!!!

I am an Australian (Frankston, Melbourne), currently working in London
under my own company...looking after the computer networks and (some support
!~@$#@!) (been here for 2 years now) as a computer contractor because the
money here is unreal for computer people. It is exactly 4 times my previous
wage in Melbourne.

(By the way, anyone considering flying to London - its good to fly
LUFTHANSA - al the pilots know the way.....)

I hope to start making more regular contrabutions to this list, as its
getting a little boring with only about 5 main chaps dicussing stuff (Gary,
John, fang, that other Australian chap, & the einstein chap......). After
all I can't winge if I am not conributing can I ??????

One thing I really do know about is electronics(dip) and Computers
(degree
& MCSE,etc), so feel free anyone to draw on my two cents worth of knowledge
!!!!.

        Regards,

        Michael W. "michael.williamson@xxxxxxxxxxxxx"
