The cautions about the 50mm not being suited I think are meant for getting 
farther away from dangerous animals (snakes) or scaring the subject, which 
would hardly apply to a watch.

Depth of field, for a given aperture and object size, won't change. Only 
macro lens have the special optical corrections for close up and macro 
shooting. You have one of the best lens in the world for macro shots--use it. 
Because of the close distance corrections, the macro lens will work better 
with extension tubes as compared to the 100/2.8 or 50/1.8.
