I would think the term 'mirror lens' would make it obvious that they are used
for self portraiture, of course! For proof, I offer the URL to Hans van

They are particularly well suited for this activity because most have low
contrast and poor resolving power (the Zuiko excepted, of course).

OK, if you want a serious answer - they are telephoto lenses that use a mirror
as one of their elements to fold the light path and achieve a very compact size
for their focal length. Disadvantages are the fixed aperture, and out of focus
highlights are in the shape of little donuts - which can be very odd looking or
dramatic, depending on your composition. You can learn about the Zuiko 500mm

There are also a couple for sale on Ebay - one a nice Zuiko, and the other a
much less expensive but less capable Tokina being sold by someone I know
well....
