Sure.

When you press the "spot" button, the OM3/4 takes a reading of what's 
showing in the central circle & an exposure diamond under the shutter 
speed scale stays on. Move the camera & a new diamond dances around.
Press the spot meter again, up to 7 more times, and the camera sets a 
diamond & averages all the spots chosen. After the 8th press, the first 
reading is discarded from the mix. The camera retains the last 8 
readings when more presses of the "spot" button are made.

So if you want your film to capture both the hilites & the shadows, 
choose spots from each & the exposure will be midway between.

The only problem is that the spot is often too big to be restricted to 
pure shadow or hilite.
