I've been following this discussion for awhile 'cuz I'm interested in the
different discussions of lab techniques, but I need to ask why bother with
the extra frame or two. From a cost benefit perspective, however, worrying
about this extra frame doesn't make much sense to me.

For the simple fact that film is by far the cheapest of my equipment costs,
I've learned to think of shooting in terms of rolls not frames. More often
than not I'm disappointed because I didn't make enough shots of a particular
event/object so I try to over shoot to make sure that I get enough shots.
This means that I'm not all that concerned about "wasting" single frames.
At the start of each roll I to wind all the way through to frame 1 to ensure
the film is indeed loading. I very rarely shot 24s, but I sometimes stop
short of 36 and pull the film out w/ the last few frames unexposed because I
want to get the film developed as quickly as possible to see what I'm doing.
When I'm shooting negs, in fact, I often stop at 35--to make it easier to
contact print on 8x10 and easier to file.

Don't get me wrong if something is happening I keep shooting until 37/38,
but usually when I get to 35/36 it's time to reload. It's just that I'd
rather not get caught losing a frame--it has happened before that the last
half frame is really promising.

Just some thoughts.
Glen
