Zigackly.  

There's leader and trailer on film for a *REASON*.  The lab needs
*something* to hold on to.  Shooting in that space is asking for pain.

I guess it's possible also that the manufacturer may expose an unknown
amount of leader-and-trailer to light during manufacturing (eg, the
film breaks and gets respliced on the assembly line).

My local E6 lab has pretty vicious contempt for people who port 39
shots on a roll and then moan that they lost one (the proprietor was
spouting off at me after receiving an abusive phone call from an irate
customer).
