Sorry, I finally got your point. You're projecting the whole image onto
the
scanner surface and not just using a projector to illuminate a slide.
But
you'd still have to find out how to turn off the lower lamp to prevent
reflections off the bottom of whatever you're projecting onto.

and I say:
Right. But if it works on a 49 dollar scanner... why not just cut the
wire? Or, as Tim has suggested, maybe we need to substitute a resistor.
It sounds like the question is whether the projector is bright enough
that the scanner will pick up the image.

So far, no one has addressed the other part of my original suggestion,
the part about the need for a ground glass or other opaque surface on
which to form the image. I don't think the scanner could handle a
virtual image floating in the air. Of course, if we're gonna just cut
the wires we can also just grind the glass cause this 49 dollar scanner
is already a gonner anyhow. Even with the ground glass Warren may have
a valid point. There may be reflections coming off the bottom of the
case which need to be suppressed by painting the interior black or,
since it's a gonner anyhow maybe we can just remove the bottom.<g>
