It will also prevent the entry of dust etc. into the bottom of the camera.
When I bought my used OM-2N it didn't have the cap, I attached a winder and
recently removed it. The coupling between the winder and camera had a log
of synthetic fibre tangled up in it - I presume this got in when the
previous owner used the body without the cap.
