[OM] Scanning color negatives

Folks,

I am just learning to scan slides and negatives. I am using a transparency
adapter on a UMAX 2400S flatbed scanner. The resolution is limited to 2400
X 600 dpi but might suffice till the gods bless me with a film scanner.
The scanner driver software is Vista Scan 3.51. I have PhotoShop 4.0 LE
for editing the images.

Questions:

Slides scan fine but color negatives still look like negatives. How do I
make the images positive? Vista Scan has a menu choice for negatives as
opposed to "transmissive," but the result is still negative.
"Transmissive" is the choice for slides.

Is there any scanner driver software that you particularly favor for
driving a flatbed scanner?

Thanks.
