I just finished reading 'The Other Side of Everest 'by Matt Dickinson, an
independent cinematographer who made the climb in 1996. He was filming an
expedition climbing the north Face at the time of the big storm in May of
that year in which eleven climbers on the south side of the mountain were
killed.

After the storm blew itself out, Matt and his crew continued their climb,
finally reaching the First Step on the North Ridge, about 28,000 feet.
Wanting some shots of his partner Alan climbing, Matt found that his Nikon
F3 had frozen in the -40C temperature. He then pulled out his Olympus
clamshell (Stylus?), backup #1, only to find that the alkaline battery in
the Olympus was too weak to operate the camera. Now desperate, Matt reached
for his final backup, a Kodak disposable 35mm camera. This one worked
flawlessly, providing the only stills taken there and at the summit.

Fortunately for all, the digital video camera did continue to work, even at
that temperature. How come?

An excellent book, by the way.

David
