  Cartier-Bresson sure likes his 50mm, but he also has used the 35 & 90
  often. 
  
  Btw, some types of lens distortion can be more or less critical
   depending on the subject. In a natural setting, where nary a 
  straight line is to be seen, this is a negligible problem. If 
  one is shooting interiors, architecturals, etc.,
  then it really matters. IMO, this type of distortion (barrel,
  pincushion, waveform) is slowly becoming more acceptable. 
  Lenses like the Canon 17-35 which have whopping amounts of distortion
  but are extremely convenient and sharp are 
  producing pics which are being published everywhere, thus changing 
  attitudes.
