There was recent discussion about the Leonid Meteor shower. The
November issue of Sky and Telescope has an excellent article. It seems
this may be a year for a genuine meteor storm such as may occur every 33
years after the passing of comet Tempel-Tuttle. Look for the meteors
beginning after 11pm to midnight as the radiant point clears the horizon
in the east northeast, the view should improve as the moon sets about
1am. apparently the expected timing of the shower favors Europe and
Africa. Previous Leonid Meteor Storms have lasted an hour or less. The
article also suggests modern video camera CCDs are more sensitive that
the eye and a video camera monitoring the sky may catch more than you
would otherwise see. The article had several good photos of previous
showers showing excellent results with 28 and 50mm f2.8 lenses using
Extachrome 400 andFuji Super G 800 and time exposures of 15 up to 45
minutes.

If you have a piece of dark sky and can stay up that late you may see
and photograph a spectacle of a lifetime.
