Regarding Jan & Denton's posts on PCs, Macs & SCSI,

I think the average Joe who goes into an appliance store and buys a PC
(or Mac for that matter) off the shelf and starts hooking up internal
devices without knowing what the hell they bought or anything else about
hardware configuration will certainly run into some problems and start
whining. Eliminate people who do this, and the problems almost
disappear. There certainly is no "standard" configuration of a PC nor
will there be a standard configuration of a Mac in the future. As we
move to new devices such as "Fire Wire" , USB and now USB 2, ATA64 Hard
drives, Ultra SCSI @ 80mbs, and the like it will be even more confusing
and difficult for this average Joe to really know and assume some
manufacturer be it Apple, Compaq, Dell, (or some unheard of name) has
properly used the best configuration and components for what he's
getting into. Now we're looking at PCs with bus speeds exceeding 133mhz
with built in USB 2 (which by the way will out perform firewire 2:1). So
what's this average Joe supposed to do if he wants the fastest and most
reliable PC for the money. Probably do what all the smart businesses
have been doing for many years. Buy a solution. Buy something that has
been custom configured down to every board level component.
Unfortunately you can't get this from Circuit City, Toys R US or Dell or
Compaq and especially not Apple. However there are thousands of
businesses and individuals who do this for a living.

As we move into even more intense digital imaging we will be using
things like 10,000rpm Ultra SCSI hard drives, and very large volume off
line storage such as DVD. The 80mbs and faster storage devices may have
a separate SCSI controller than those of the slower peripherals such as
scanners. We may have USB (and USB 2) or SCSI readers to read the Smart
Media or Flash memory cards off our digital cameras.

What I'm trying to point out is that don't expect an out of the box or
off the shelf solution from even lovable Apple (who by the way puts just
5400 rpm drives in its new G4 ). So either do your homework well or
hire an outside specialist to create your state of the art digital
imaging solution. You'll be glad you did. Now stop your whining about
Apple vs. PC. It's what's under the hood not the name badge on the
grill.
