A warning first...I'm afraid this is degenerating into a PC v Mac thread...if
you read nothing else before trashing this message:
I'd like to remind everyone (myself included) to give themselves a slap in the
face whenver they start confusing "average joe" with a "smart business" which
requires a "state of the art digital imaging solution"

But is less likely to on a Mac, given the same lack of research.

Eliminate people who do this, and the problems almost

Sorry, this is misleading. For a single high-speed device on the bus,
communicating with the processor, USB 2.0 will outperform firewire 1.0, but IRL
you probably won't see it. Furthemore, by the time USB 2 is ratified (at
480MB/s), firewire will be shipping at 800MB/s. When you add to the the fact
that all USB traffic is routed through the processor adding latency and using
overhead (where firewire devices communicate directly) and the superior
management of data transmitted at different speeds over firewire, USB 2 doesn't
look so hot. Check http://www.MacKiDo.com/Hardware/USB2.html (an admittedly
Mac-biased site) if you want the techie details.

Wrong, if he's average Joe, his money won't cover a solution (both because of
the magnitude of the $$$ investment, and the often non-financial expected
return) regardless of it's speed and reliability. He'll buy a Dell, or an Apple,
or whatever, and it will suck in comparison.

Why "especially not apple"? You might just as well have said "especially not
compaq"...

For an off the shelf solution for average joe (who likes to play with digital
imaging, but isn't a pro, and doesn't make their living from it) Apple are doing
pretty well with their iMac DV (and no doubt there are or soon will be similar
packages from PC vendors).

(who by the way puts just

Sure, in the low-end, but you're a bit behind the times...the "standard
configuration of a Mac" hasn't been the _only_ configuration for a while. You
can add a 3 x 36Gb Ultra2 SCSI array with 2 channel card if you want to, right
off the apple website. What is the base drive that comes with a Dell? An Ultra
ATA 5400 rpm...

So either do your homework well or

If it's all about what's under the hood, why single out Macs when you tell
everyone to stop whinig? Mac users will stop whining when PC users stop pointing
out the faults inherent in all personal computers by singling out "especially
Apple" as their example.

Obligatory OM content: I use a G3/266 mac to read the oly list from work, and a
PPro 200 to read the oly list from home. Whetever computer I use, the messages
on the list are the same;-)
