Simon,
           does Kodak recommend shooting at 400 without a red filter or with 
a red filter?

This can make a big difference as the original question was shooting on auto 
using a deep red filter. 

If Kodak recommends using a filter they may still be assuming you are 
metering manually with a seperate meter ( without
a filter on the meter) but with the filter on the camera? 

If that is the case, you could meter the scene without the filter on the 
camera and then remeter with the filter on. This will give you a correction 
factor to dial in on the film speed compensation for  subsequent auto 
exposure use But if the meter sensitivity has dropped off too much with the 
filter in place then this may be too inaccurate to use auto.
