[OM] defocussing to emphasise star-trail color?

Would the shape of the aperture come into play or no? I have a couple
shots, one of Orion progressively defocussed in three step from infinity
to 3m on the 28mm lens over half or so hour, but it'll be a while before I
finish the roll of slides and get them back. f:8, the sharpest for the
28/3.5 G.Zuiko.

More importantly, I want to hear opinions/feedback on using this technique
to capture the Leonid meteor shower. By setting the lens to just
a little before infinity, the star point become little larger, bettering
the color rendition. I think the NG photo last month that we discussed
used this technique as stars are a bit larger than point-streaks. The same
should occur for all subjects at infinity, so instead of a scratch-like
trail, I hope I'll get something more substantial and easier to see.

That's my theory. Correct or no?

Of course, this all hinges on the weather...rain forecast Wed night, of
all times <grumbling bigtime> Sigh.
