I've been pleased with the quality of the photos taken with my new 
Sigma 28mm f/1.8 and old 18mm f/2.8. All the new Sigmas have 
polycarbonate bodies, which appears to be just fine to me. There is a 
threoretical advantage of plastic over aluminum in that the latter 
changes dimension a lot more than the former. This means that the 
position of the glass may change more with temperature in an aluminum 
barrel than in a poly one.

I still have some K&E slide rules made from plastic just for this 
reason.
