ALL things being equal, certainly the same lens formula in a MC will outperform a SC version, although only in certain situations. But that shouldn't be the determining factor. I use several 1950's Leica lenses that are SC, an it doesn't hurt my pix except in high-flare situations. Buy the lens in the best condition.

As for the dealer, he's feeding you a load of bull. ALL major lenses were coated post-WW2. Few major manufacturer released uncoated lenses after ~1945-50. If this guy _actually_ believes that line about coatings correcting for manufacturing flaws, he's either stupid or naive. I for one would take everything he says from now on with a grain of salt.

For more info in general, see the FAQ at http://brashear.phys.appstate.edu/lhawkins/photo/olympus.faq.html.

Look here for a discussion on SC & MC datings. http://brashear.phys.appstate.edu/lhawkins/photo/multicoat.txt Quoting from that page: << NB: According to Olympus America, the way to tell if a lens is multicoated is to look at the writing on the front. If the lens has an element letter (eg G.Zuiko) it is single coated. If it lacks the element letter, and/or has MC on the front, it is multicoated.>>

Look here for a survey of front lens markings and interpretations: http://brashear.phys.appstate.edu/lhawkins/photo/mc-sc.survey

FYI, The silver front ring was on early lenses and is only a rough interpretation of MC vs. SC. All the silver-ringed lenses were SC, but not all the black-ringed lenses are MC. The silver front rings disappeared sometime in the late 1970's.

I am close to a purchase of a 100mm F/2.8 lens from a vender. I am unclear
on the subject of coatings on these lenses. He states that the lenses are
not marked as MC or multicoated and that he has never seen this lens marked
MC. I was under the impression that the earlier versions of the lens were SC
and that the more recent, improved lens was MC. He states that discussions
he had with Olympus indicated that lenses were only coated to compensate for
flaws during their manufacture? He states that he has several of these
lenses in 9+ condition and the older models are the ones that have a silver
outer ring. None are marked as MC. Asking price $149. Thoughts/comments?
