[OM] OM-2S and reciprocity failure

Subject: [OM] OM-2S and reciprocity failure

Hi all,

I was out with my OM-2SP yesterday, using Agfa APX25 b/w film (ISO25) in
*very* dull conditions. I noticed something rather interesting. The meter
reading in manual at f3.5 was 0.5 sec approx, which equates to 8 sec at f16
which was the taking aperture. In auto, the camera opened the shutter for
24 sec, about 1.5 stops "over exposed". It's usual to add a stop or two
for reciprocity failure when you're shooting in excess of 1 or 2 seconds,
and it seems that the camera knows this. I checked at f3.5 and the shutter
opened for what sounded like the indicated 0.5 sec. It seems Mr Maitani
thinks of everything....! Anyone have a definitive answer on this - is
this indeed designed in, or do I have a conveniently faulty OM-2SP? I'll
check my other 2SP when I get the chance, but I do recall somewhere in the
mists of time reading that the 2n also behaves this way. (I did take into
account the fact that the metering is spot in manual vs averaging in auto,
BTW; the subject was low contrast too and I expect to have to use lith
techniques to get any sort of half decent result.)

Cheers
Richard
