My reason for making a high res scan is that 1) I will probably wish to
make a inkjet print and want the pixel abundance to do that, and  2) I want
the web image to look as much as possible like the printable file.

There is no reason why one must have a high res scan in tow to make a web
image. That's just how I happen to do it. You don't need to defend
yourself.  Different strokes. :)
