Actually, you're both right. The failure Tom's checking for is that the
diaphragm *shouldn't* close with the lens off the camera and the DOF preview
button not pressed as you change the aperture setting; some lenses with
sticky stopdown linkages will close down momentarily as the setting is
changed. You're correct in that if the diaphragm doesn't close when you
press the DOF button, then there's a problem.
