Larry,
When I was shooting Nikkors more, the 35-105/3.5-4.5 was my most commonly
used lens. Though I had the 35-70/3.5-4.5 Zuiko, I missed the range of the
35-105 and eventually found a good used Zuiko 35-105. With it and the
85-250 I do the bulk of my tripod shooting.
The 35-105 is just fine handheld too, but it is way heavier than the
35-70/3.5-4.5 (but almost everything is). I put up with the one-touch
design in this range, although generally I've become a more or less total
convert to two-touch zooms. I prefer slower film, so I live at f5.6-8
(handheld and/or with flash) with this lens. Works great.
I have a number of photos out on my site (especially gallery one) shot with
this lens. The following was made in the "macro" range:

I don't always hike with my macro lenses, so it's nice to be able to
"cheat" a little with this feature. I thought the lens acquitted itself
very well.
Its biggest shortcomings for me are its weight and one-touch design, but
the weight is really not bad and the other is a very minor preference issue.
