I have also seen cameras where the customer had applied "only a little" 3 IN
1 oil to the "gears under the mirror".  By the time I got the camera the
whole inside of the mirror box and film chamber was wet and shiney from
spreading oil.  I don't know how WD40 would behave.
Perhaps a little WD40 on the shutter speed dial ghot it moving but will the
shutter still be working properly 3 months from now?  Maybe it will.
