    Look at Cartier-Bresson's "Photoportraits" or new "Tete a Tete" books.
Bokeh doesn't play a big part in many of his shots. TRY IT. The great
majority of the portraits are with 50mm (Leitz) lenses. Just
keep it at waist-length (or further away) and it should do nicely.
