Several other factors come into play besides the lens focal length-
    1.  The height of the flash.
    2.  The amount of ambient room light (the more room light, the less the 
flash has       to dump, AND more room light = constricted pupils of your 
subject which =         less red eye.
    3.  Whether or not your subject is looking directly at the camera.
    4. The ISO speed of the film. Slower film = more the flash has to put out.
I'm sure I missed a couple of factors, but these I believe, are the main 
reasons you will or won't get red-eye.
