Buddy,
  I use this same setup twice a year for a group photo.  Camera/flash
setup as stated, 25-35 people, high ceiling (~25 feet), 50 mm f1.8 lens
using ASA100 print film.  I've been doing it for about 4 years and never
had a redeye yet.  Even though our setups are the same our shots are
entirely different.  I sometimes put an optical slaved Vivitar 283 in
back of the group to highlight the alter and I don't even figure that
light into the picture.  
  Bottom line, It works for me.
