I'm going to start searching the web for full moon shots over Russian
submarines and claim them for my own. <g>

Thanks for listening to me whine...

Dave,
Next time you do this, slam the camera back shut again and proceed as
normal. The outer layer of film wrapped around the take-up spool is
surprisingly good at protecting the images underneath; you might be
surprised that many frames on a roll will still turn out well.

The solution to your basic problem is pretty clear. It is reasonably
well known that photojournalists often use "one camera one lens,"
meaning, they never switch lenses--they dedicate one body to each lens
they use. So if Sebastiao Salgado uses a 28mm, 35mm, and 60mm, it means
he will have three camera bodies strapped around his neck.

Another way of organizing yourself is to pick a limited number of films
and dedicate a body to each film. Narrow your film choices down to
two--three at most--and get a different type of body for each film. An
OM-4T for your most-used film, an OM-1 for the film you most often use
for set shots when the camera is tripodded; or one black camera body and
one chrome (or champagne <s>); like that. Then, simply never load the
designated camera with anything but the designated film.

It works. Don't think pros don't deal with the same confusion you've
described.
