[OM] Rack & Pinion vs. straight helicoid and inner focusing?

Hi,

Can anyone explain to me what the "Rack & Pinion" focusing mechanism of the
600/6.5 and the 1000/11 is all about?

I'm curious what the differences are between this type of focusing and the
straight helicoid and inner focusing methods.

Also, does the rack and pinion type of focusing work anywhere near as slowly
as the straight helicoid mechanism (for long telephoto lenses, that is), or
anywhere near as fast as the inner focusing method?

Cheers!
Olafo
