Some old timers used leather thongs (boot laces) instead of the usual split 
rings
to attach the strap to the camera. Result: no wear on the finish, or on the 
lugs.
A piece of leather +/- 8" through the lug  and tied, the the strap attached to 
the
loop... has the advantage of feeling like a 'bare' camera (no strap bump) in 
use.

The biggest single thing I do to protect the finishes of these cameras is 
to use the little leather things attached to the neck strap rings in the 
proper way.  I've got an OM-1n that I've had for 15+ years with NO brassing 
around the lugs -- something that's unusual in a camera that's used as 
often as this one is.
