Smart to wait, Giles. In our conferences there are many a nightmare story
about the formation of scar tissue, or too deep an incision causing
irreparable slits etc...and they have no idea about the long-term formation
of scarring. Where they really think it will cause problems is later, in your
60's, hwne you'll need catact surgury.
All the Lasix laser incisions (RK is with scapel..now passe) do is to
re-shape the cornea in order to correct misshaping (which is what casues
nearsightedness, etc) There is a real moral argument about permanently making
one eye the near and one the far prescription...such an alteration is
irreversable. That might preclude later needing bifocals, but at what later
cost?? This is still in the very "experimental" stage..altho the performers
of this surgury will never admit that. The MD's have found a great way to
make miney ($1500 an eye average in Virginia) Time Magazine in October just
did a good writeup of the dangers involved.
You'll see very few of us in the industry getting the surgury for ourselves.
That alone should tell you something about the perceived risk.
Susan (optician)
