You can actually have some input into which eye is near vs. far, but usually 
the prescriber, when examining your eyes, determines which is your dominant 
eye (stronger), and usually designates this as your distance...but not 
always. It can be a cooperative effort if you emphasize your 
occupations/hobbies.

Re the glasses for climbing..I often make specialty bifocals for a variety of 
uses...for example, for a golfer I put the bifocal in the top of the 
lens..while he's putting, he doesn't look thru the window, but he can hold 
his score card high and read it.(This may even work for your climbing..) For 
computer use, put a 35mm(wide) bifocal in the center of the lens (where a 
trifocal would normally be) for the mid-range for on the computer, and his 
distance in the rest so he can look at the TV or out the window, etc. 

Find yourself a good lab-trained optician (NOT your usual chain-store 
variety...and a dying breed) and they can do just about anything with those 
lenses that you need..
