Thanks for the excellent explanation. My brain was suffering from CRS and
it grasped for "reading contacts" instead of the bifocal variety. I'm more
amazed at how these variations can possibly work! The monovision approach
seems very interesting. I think I'll mention this to my eye doctor and give
it a go.

<Ron,
those are not the same. we actually have "bifocal contacts" in the
industry,
but they are the pits. One configuration has an actual bifocal in the
contact
that is weighted to swim in the bottom part of the eye..horrible in reality
as the "window" is never where you need it. The other current configuration
has the bifocal in a band around the outer edge of the contact...really hard
to adjust to, much less use.
If you were to ask me if there were really a bifocal contact on the market
that works..I'd have to say no.
Monovision is a strange ability of the brain to actually adjust to using one
eye for distance and one eye for near. It is not something you can just try
on and see..you have to put them in and try it for a week or two, as each
person adjusts at a different rate. Once the brain "clicks", it is
wonderful.
If you need no distance correction, then you'd only need the one for the
close correction (I believe one of the members wrote in about using this).
It is well worth a try , if you really would like to try contacts but must
have bifocal correction, to give this method a try. Just tell your optician
that you wish to discuss using monovision contacts.
