Barry -- What about the little spring loaded "stop" on the bottom of the
flash unit shoe - between the outer contacts.  That little gadget would
appear to drop into the notch on the flash shoe and position the flash
properly.  I'll bet that it has broken or stuck up into the base of the
flash unit shoe.  There are no other stops that I can see.
