Also, the earlier version had a tripod collar that you could loosen and rotate
90 to vertical. The newer version doesn't quite go to 90, making it pretty
useless for flopping the camera.

I think the first version Tamron made did not have internal focusing and
was therefore not well suited for sports photographers and others who
needed fast focusing as well as a fast lens. 

The next version had internal focusing like the original lenses.
I don't know if they have made a newer version since the eighties.
