I believe this was a Gnome Rotary (or derivative thereof); the engine rotated around the crank-shaft instead of the crank-shaft rotating within the engine. Funny arrangemtn, but it worked, and was more reliable than the in-line engines available at the time.

I think that's right, and if I remember correctly, it's
because whole
engine
rotated, rather than just the crankshaft, which in this case
was secured
to
the firewall.  At least I think that's it--my head hurts just
thinking
about
it!
