First guess:
Imbalance between full charge and higher voltage in the C's, and partially
discharged lower voltage AA's caused drain on the C's to charge the AA's
until all of them reached the same voltage.  The two sets of cells are in
parallel and if there is a voltage imbalance between them you will get
current flow even with the flash off.  The only thing that would prevent
this is forward diodes in the T-32 to protect against reverse current flow
into its cells and I don't know enough details on the T-32's design.

Second guess:
You've reached the limit to how many times you can recharge one set, the
other, or both.  Not having used the rechargeable alkalines I don't know
what their life is, nor do I know how many times you've recharged yours.
If the rechargeable alkalines are like most batteries, the amount of charge
(milliampere hours) they can take on recharging will eventually diminsh
until they refuse to take a charge.

I would try fresh non-rechargeable AA's and C's in both and see if behavior
returns to normal.  With mine, if there are fresh batteries in both it
recycles very fast.
