As you zoom the varifocal, it goes out of focus, so you must refocus. The focus
shift is less pronounced with relatively low ratio zooms. I believe this is why
you see the varifocals in the wide to short tele range. So, the trade off is
loss of continuous focus for a relatively fast and sharp lens (for much less
money than a conventional zoom. of comparable image quality) I use the lens a 
lot covering events in small to medium rooms. I find the zoom range lets me work
with just one lens without compromising image quality too much. This is
practical as long as the action is slow. Wouldn't want to take it to a shoot
where rapid zoom and constant focus are needed (e.g. sports, journalism)
