Well there are a bunch of new 3.3 meg cameras comming out (olympus 3030,
cannon s20, nikon 990, cassio xxx) but the verdict isn't out on how the
new 3meg ccd performs. The fuji is a different beast from the others -- it
uses a new fuji ccd which has hexagon cells. -- a very good web site for
digital cameras is photo.askey.net. Go to "news" for more details on the above
cameras. There is also a section that describes why the D1 has very good
pictures (compare to other 'higher resolution' cameras). The pictures for
the D1 look a lot sharper/nicer than the samples from these other cameras. I
do not know if this is because the pictures were touched up or if the D1
produce better images out of the box.

I do think that the samples from the Fuji S1 look bit blury so it might
not be a fair comparison. One of the recent articles (somewhere but not under
article) seem to indicate that a 6 meg ccd (I think) would have the same
resolution of aps film and it would take 20+meg to get the same resolution as
35mm (don't know which type of film they were comparing it to). However, the
articles on the D1 are very informative about 'resolution' and help explain
why the D1 produces much better images than higher resolution 2meg cameras.
