Did you have film in the cameras when you did that? On auto, the exposure
time is controlled by measuring and integrating the light reflected off the
film surface during the exposure - once the film has received (and
reflected) enough light, the shutter is closed. If you don't have film in
there, there's no film surface to reflect the light, and the sensor only
receives the much smaller amount of light reflected by the black pressure
plate - so it will take much longer for it to receive enough light to start
the second shutter curtain.
