Your capacitor seems to be damaged or your batteries are weak. Sometimes, if
the flash does work manually, you can fire it off with a full manual flash,
let it charge and fire it again, over and over until the capacitor is
reformed. Actually this should be done to all flashed as part of regular
maintenance, i.e. a few charge and flash cycles to keep the capacitor in
shape. I don't remember if it should be left charged or discharged though.

If you didn't have any film in the camera while experimenting and testing
your shutter, the OTF (off the film) metering system will read off of the
black pressure plate and cause very long exposures.
