Yes, I had thought of that idea too.  I think it is the best practical
solution.  I have a manfrotto (Bogen ?) tripod which has spirit levels in
the head, and that's not accurate either as the quick release plate doesn't
**guarantee** that the bottom plate of the camera is parallel to the plane
of the spirit levels (the quick release plates have cork or rubber to avoid
metal-metal contact on the bottom plate of the camera).
