I just tried put some blue LEDs in a clear case on the curve tracer and
aimed some light at it. I could not get any change. I'll look around
for some different ones. So far the best one has been a transistor in a
metal can with the top cut off.

Make sure it's reverse-biased, and crank up the mA/div.
