It was because of the serious recession of 1980-81. Another phenomenon that
started about then was child care centers and two wage couples. Up until
that time, only person in the family (the father/husband usually) needed to
work because he could earn enough to support everyone. That stopped in
1980-81. Buying power and earning power had been decreasing in the US all
through the 70's and finally snapped during that recession. When people lost
thier high paying jobs, they had no choice put to take a lower paying
position somewhere else. This forced the other spouse to seek employment,
leading to day care for the children.

The garage sales then were a easy way to earn money. People needed stuff
cheap, and other people needed to unload stuff for cash. They are less
popular today because of eBay and the general health of the economy.
