There is a fixed metal tab located where an auto lens would have one that
moves with the aperture ring.  I presume this is to at least fix a meter
bias for wide open at f/2.8.

Don't have the manual, but suspected this might be what was happening.
After the posting I played with the preview on an auto lens and the meter
needle eventually moves, but does not respond immediately like the OM-4
LED's do.

I have used the lens on the OM-4 quite successfully with the lens shifted
and OM-4 in auto mode.  It's forgetting to stop down to the desired
aperture first that has bit me a couple times too.
